Grooved & Perforated Resonant System Tunes a Community Arts Centre Multi-Purpose Hall

On the outskirts of a growing Oceania city, this community arts centre was built to serve a wide range of neighbourhood needs: weekday school group visits, weekend craft markets, evening choir rehearsals, amateur theatre productions and occasional small concerts. The main hall was the heart of the facility — a generous, high-ceilinged space with polished timber floors, painted brick walls and a raised stage. But its versatility was also its acoustic challenge. A room built to host everything from spoken-word lectures to live music needs a carefully tuned acoustic environment; without it, speech sounds muddy for audiences at the back, and musical performances lose clarity and dynamic range. The centre’s management team wanted a solution that would serve all these uses without compromise, while blending into the hall’s warm, community-focused aesthetic rather than imposing a clinical technical look.

Acoustic simulation was carried out based on the hall’s volume, geometry and intended uses before any product was specified. The resulting system pairs grooved and perforated resonant acoustic panels on side and rear walls with high-density inorganic fiberglass acoustic ceiling tiles overhead. The wall panels — fitted with mineral wool infill and rear air cavities — have their slot and perforation ratios precisely tuned to target the 250–1000Hz mid-low frequency standing waves that are the primary cause of muddy speech and boomy low-end in large halls. The complete resonant system achieves an overall NRC rating of 0.90 with balanced full-band absorption, so the hall performs equally well for spoken-word events and live music. Natural light oak veneer finishes were selected for the wall panels, matching the existing timber floor and stage and reinforcing the hall’s warm, welcoming character. The ceiling area uses fiberglass acoustic tiles with an NRC of 0.90–0.95 to control overhead reflected sound and optimise overall sound field uniformity. All materials carry ASTM E84 Class A fire certification, meeting the strict safety standards for public assembly buildings.

The 460㎡ hall was completed during a scheduled three-week school holiday break, with no disruption to the centre’s regular programme. Since reopening, the difference has been remarked on by every user group. School presentations are now clearly audible from every seat without amplification. Choir rehearsals sound balanced, and the amateur theatre group reports that actors no longer need to over-project to be heard at the back. The centre has also begun hosting small live music events — something it could not reliably do before — and audience feedback has been consistently positive. The light oak acoustic walls have become such a natural part of the interior that most visitors assume they were part of the original building, which is perhaps the highest compliment a custom acoustic solution can receive.
