Grooved & Perforated Acoustic Panels for Indoor School Swimming Pool

Project Challenge
A school’s indoor swimming pool facility suffered from extreme acoustic issues. The large enclosed space with tiled walls, concrete structure and hard water surface created intense low-frequency reverberation. Splashing water, whistles, coach instructions and spectator chatter echoed continuously, making communication difficult and increasing fatigue for swimmers and staff. Standard porous acoustic materials would degrade quickly in the high-humidity, chlorinated pool environment, requiring a durable, moisture-resistant professional solution.

Solution
Combined grooved and perforated resonant acoustic panels with moisture-resistant wood veneer were installed on the upper side walls and rear wall of the pool hall. Engineered on the Helmholtz resonance principle, the precision slot-and-hole structure targets stubborn 250Hz–1000Hz mid-low frequency noise that dominates indoor pool spaces. The panels are treated with water-repellent and anti-corrosion coatings to withstand constant high humidity and chlorine exposure. Paired with rear air cavities, the system achieves an overall NRC of 0.90 for balanced full-band sound absorption.

Results
Post-renovation testing confirmed a major reduction in pool hall reverberation and overall noise level. Coaches can communicate clearly with swimmers across the pool, and echo-induced fatigue is greatly reduced. The moisture-resistant panels maintain stable performance in the harsh pool environment, with no warping or degradation over time. The upgrade greatly improved comfort and usability for both athletic training and recreational swimming.
