Custom Acoustic Build for Analog Film Darkroom & Photography Gallery

This independent analog photography studio houses a professional darkroom, a print processing lab and a small gallery for film photography exhibitions. The converted industrial space features exposed concrete, metal ductwork and matte black finishes, with a minimalist industrial aesthetic that matches its analog artistic focus. However, the hard reflective surfaces caused two key issues: darkroom and processing equipment noise carried into the gallery, disrupting the quiet viewing experience, and artist talks and opening receptions suffered from muddy sound and excessive reverberation. The studio required a discreet, thin-profile acoustic solution that would preserve the raw, monochromatic industrial aesthetic without adding bulky, visible treatment.

We delivered a fully custom acoustic solution combining ultra-thin recycled polyester wall panels and high-density fiberglass ceiling tiles. Slim PET panels were mounted on gallery perimeter walls, custom finished in matte black to blend invisibly with the dark wall surfaces, absorbing reflected speech and reducing exhibition event reverberation. Fiberglass acoustic ceiling tiles were installed in the lab and darkroom zones to absorb equipment and ventilation noise, with Class A fire resistance and moisture stability suited to the chemical processing environment. We calibrated panel placement through acoustic simulation to target specific noise transfer paths between work areas and the public gallery, minimizing visual impact while maximizing acoustic performance.

After the upgrade, equipment noise from the processing lab is no longer audible in the gallery, creating a calm, contemplative atmosphere for viewing prints. Artist talks and opening events have clear, intelligible sound quality with no harsh echo, and audience engagement has improved. The acoustic treatment is virtually undetectable to visitors, preserving the studio’s raw, minimalist industrial identity. The project demonstrates how precision-customized, low-profile acoustic design can solve complex noise challenges in a creative industrial space without compromising its artistic aesthetic.
