Bespoke Wood Wool Acoustic Design for Mountain Boutique Hotel Common Area

Nestled in a mountain scenic area, this boutique hotel features a double-height lobby and lounge built with exposed stone, raw concrete and solid wood, intended to create a close-to-nature retreat atmosphere. The hard, reflective surfaces caused severe reverberation across the open space; guest chatter, footsteps and background music echoed continuously, breaking the quiet, immersive resort vibe and leaving guests feeling restless during their stay. The hotel owner required an acoustic upgrade that would preserve the raw, organic architectural style rather than introducing generic flat decorative panels.
We developed a fully customized acoustic scheme centered on cement-bonded wood wool panels, applied across the full ceiling and partial upper wall surfaces. The natural spruce fiber-cement texture complements the hotel’s rustic natural aesthetic, requiring no additional paint or finishing layers to maintain the integrity of the original design. Based on acoustic simulation of the space volume, we designed a staggered modular layout to optimize sound absorption coverage, delivering NRC 0.80–0.90 performance that effectively softens crowd noise and reduces overall reverberation. The Class A fire-rated, moisture-stable panels are well suited to the humid mountain climate and high-traffic hospitality environment.
After completion, ambient noise in the lobby and lounge dropped noticeably even at peak guest hours. The space retains its open, airy feeling while offering a calm, quiet atmosphere that aligns perfectly with the hotel’s wellness-focused positioning. Guests frequently comment on the relaxed, peaceful ambiance, and average stay duration has increased significantly. The project demonstrates how custom textured acoustic solutions can elevate both sensory experience and brand identity without compromising architectural vision.
