This 320㎡ community church in Manchester, UK serves as a multi-use venue for Sunday services, community meetings, small choir performances and after-school children’s activities. The original stone masonry walls and high vaulted ceiling create prominent mid-low frequency standing waves and uneven sound distribution. Speech intelligibility is poor during services and announcements, and choir performances lack clarity and balance. The venue required acoustic tuning that supported both spoken word and music, while respecting the historic character of the building interior.
Tailored Acoustic Strategy
Side and rear walls feature a grooved and perforated resonant acoustic panel system, paired with mineral wool infill and rear air cavities. Based on acoustic simulation of the hall’s volume and geometry, the slot and perforation ratios are precisely tuned to target 250–1000Hz mid-low frequency standing waves — the primary cause of muddy speech and boomy bass. The overall system achieves an NRC rating of 0.90, delivering balanced full-band sound absorption suitable for both speech and live music. The ceiling area uses high-density fiberglass acoustic tiles, NRC 0.90–0.95, to control overhead reflections and improve overall sound field uniformity. All panels meet EN 13501 Class A fire safety standards for UK public assembly venues. The warm wood-effect finish of the wall panels complements the historic stone interior, avoiding a modern industrial look.
On-Site Results
Sound distribution evens out across all seating areas, with clearer speech intelligibility and tighter, more defined choral response. The venue can now reliably host both spoken services and musical performances without additional temporary acoustic equipment. Congregation feedback on sound clarity has improved notably, and more community groups have begun booking the space for events.
