Space & Sound Challenge

This 280㎡ independent neighborhood bookstore is located in a pedestrian-friendly street in downtown Copenhagen, Denmark, with exposed ceiling joists, solid oak floors and an in-store coffee bar. The high ceilings and hard reflective surfaces give the space its warm historic aesthetic, but also create noticeable reverberation during peak hours. Page turning, customer conversation, espresso machine noise and background music stack quickly, making it hard to hear staff recommendations and forcing patrons to raise their voices. The owner required acoustic improvement that preserved the store’s signature raw, literary atmosphere rather than introducing generic industrial-looking products.

Tailored Acoustic Strategy

The solution centers on cement-bonded wood wool acoustic ceiling panels installed across the main reading area and coffee zone, with an NRC rating of 0.80–0.90. The natural textured fibre-cement finish requires no additional paint, blending seamlessly with the store’s exposed joist and brick interior while absorbing scattered reflected sound across the high-ceilinged space. All panels carry EN 13501 Class A fire certification, meeting EU commercial building safety requirements. Accent walls behind reading nooks use E0-grade formaldehyde-free polyester fiber acoustic panels in warm paper tones, NRC 0.85–0.95, absorbing mid-high frequency chatter at seated height. Panels are CNC precision-cut to match the store’s built-in bookshelf details, doubling as subtle decorative features.

On-Site Results

Peak-hour ambient noise drops noticeably across the reading area, and customers can hold quiet conversations at normal volume even when the store is full. Average customer dwell time increases by an estimated 24%, as patrons linger longer over books and coffee. The textured wood wool ceiling enhances the space’s warm, inviting atmosphere rather than reading as an obvious functional upgrade.
