In a busy Southeast Asian capital, this premium veterinary care centre was designed to feel more like a boutique wellness clinic than a traditional animal hospital. The facility offered consultation rooms, inpatient wards, a surgical suite and a dedicated feline-only recovery area, all finished with warm wood tones, soft lighting and clean, modern lines. But from the first weeks of operation, the clinical team noticed a recurring problem: the hard tile floors, painted walls and thin partition walls created a highly reflective sound environment. A single anxious dog’s barking would bounce off every surface, quickly triggering stress responses in other animals — cats hiding in their carriers, dogs pacing, rabbits freezing. Staff struggled to hear phone calls and client consultations over the noise, and pet owners repeatedly commented that their animals seemed more agitated after visits than before. The centre needed an acoustic solution that was safe for animals, hygienic enough for a clinical environment, and gentle enough to actually reduce stress triggers rather than just mask the noise.

Two pet-safe acoustic materials were selected, matched to different functional zones. Consultation rooms and inpatient wards received full-height flame-retardant fabric wrapped acoustic panels with a high-density fibreglass core (NRC 0.85–1.0). The medical-grade stain-resistant fabric supports daily wipe-down disinfection — essential in a clinical setting — and the panels effectively reduce inter-room sound leakage, so that a barking dog in one ward does not immediately distress animals in the next. All panels carry ASTM E84 Class A fire certification. The reception, waiting area and corridor walls use E0 grade formaldehyde-free polyester fiber acoustic boards, custom-cut with fully rounded edges to eliminate any sharp corners that could harm curious or anxious animals. With an NRC rating of 0.85+, the PET panels soften overall ambient reverberation in the high-traffic public zones, and their soft muted colour palette — warm terracotta and sage — adds a gentle visual layer that complements the clinic’s boutique aesthetic. The material is non-toxic, has no small detachable parts, and stands up to occasional contact from excited patients.

The 200㎡ installation was completed in 10 days, scheduled in phases so that half of the clinic remained operational throughout. The change was noticeable within the first week. Anxious bark loops happened far less frequently, and animals settled into the wards more quickly after admission. Cats in the feline-only recovery area showed visible signs of relaxation — grooming, resting, coming to the front of their enclosures — rather than the hiding and freezing behaviour the team had seen before. Staff reported less vocal fatigue and clearer phone communication, and pet owners began commenting on how calm the clinic felt compared to other veterinary facilities they had visited. The rounded-edge PET panels and soft fabric walls have also become part of the centre’s brand story, featured in its marketing as evidence of a genuinely animal-centred approach to design — where even the walls are working to reduce stress.
