Child-Safe Acoustic Panels for Early Learning Centre in Oceania

This community early learning centre in Oceania offers play-based programmes for children under five, with open play areas, quiet reading corners and small activity rooms. High ceilings, polished timber floors and painted plaster walls created strong echo across the open space, and even normal play noise and group singing would build up quickly, overstimulating younger children and making it hard for educators to guide activities. Local regulations required all interior materials to be non-toxic, impact-resistant, free of sharp edges and fully fire-rated for public childcare facilities.

We used a combination of E0 grade polyester fiber acoustic panels and perforated acoustic panels for the upgrade, prioritising child safety and long-term durability. Soft, rounded-edge polyester panels were installed on lower wall areas and column surfaces across play zones, in warm muted primary colours. The formaldehyde-free, ultra-low VOC material absorbs mid-high frequency play noise and adds a gentle visual layer to the space, with an impact-resistant surface treatment that stands up to daily bumps and contact. With an NRC rating of 0.85+, the panels help bring down overall ambient reverberation without adding any small detachable parts or hard corners. The main activity hall ceiling was fitted with high-density inorganic fiberglass acoustic ceiling tiles, NRC 0.90–0.95, to control overhead reflected sound across the large open hall. All materials carry ASTM E84 Class A fire certification, meeting the strict local safety standards for childcare facilities.

The 220㎡ installation was completed in 10 days during school holidays, with no disruption to the centre’s regular programme. Today, the play spaces feel noticeably calmer. Children are less easily overstimulated by ambient noise, group activities run more smoothly, and educators report less vocal fatigue over the course of a full day. All rounded-edge panels have held up well to active daily use, and the project passed local childcare facility safety and fire inspections on first submission.
