Custom Wood Wool Acoustic Design for Handmade Ceramic Studio & Gallery

ceramic studio acoustics

This independent ceramic art studio operates a working production space, a retail gallery and a small workshop classroom, housed in a converted industrial unit with high exposed ceilings, concrete floors and brick feature walls. The raw, textured aesthetic suited the brand’s handcrafted identity, but the hard surfaces created severe reverberation across the open-plan space. Pottery wheel noise, clay working sounds and visitor conversation overlapped heavily, making teaching instructions hard to follow and disrupting the calm viewing experience in the gallery area. The studio owner required an acoustic upgrade that would complement the wabi-sabi, handmade aesthetic rather than introduce sleek, modern panels that would feel out of place.

We designed a layered custom acoustic solution centered on cement-bonded spruce wood wool panels, installed across the full ceiling of the gallery and classroom zones. The natural fiber-cement texture aligns perfectly with the earthy, artisanal atmosphere of the space, requiring no additional finish and retaining the raw, material-forward character of the interior. We supplemented with targeted recycled polyester panels on upper workshop walls to absorb equipment noise, custom finished in muted terracotta tones to match the brickwork. The combined system delivers consistent NRC 0.80–0.90 sound absorption, balancing production, gallery and teaching acoustics across the open layout. All panels carry Class A fire resistance and excellent moisture stability, suitable for a wet ceramic working environment.

After installation, overall space reverberation dropped significantly. Workshop instructors can give clear directions without raising their voices, and the gallery area maintains a quiet, contemplative atmosphere for visitors. The textured wood wool ceiling has become a celebrated design feature that reinforces the studio’s handmade brand identity, rather than reading as a functional retrofit. Customer feedback highlights the calm, focused atmosphere, and class enrollment and gallery sales have both seen measurable growth.
