Wood Wool Acoustic Panels | Bristol Independent Bookshop Café Acoustic Upgrade

wood wool acoustic panels

Project Challenge

This 270㎡ independent bookshop with integrated café is located in central Bristol. It features exposed brick walls, raw concrete floors and high open ceiling joists, matching the warm literary industrial aesthetic locals love — but hard reflective surfaces create noticeable reverberation during weekend peak hours. Espresso machines, page turning, customer chatter and background events build up quickly, making staff recommendations hard to hear and table conversation strained. Fine paper dust and coffee spills also require acoustic materials that are stain-resistant, easy to wipe clean and dimensionally stable, without losing the shop’s cozy bookish identity.

Our Solution

We installed cement-bonded wood wool acoustic ceiling panels across the main browsing area and café zone, with an NRC rating of 0.80–0.90. The dense textured fibre-cement finish resists paper dust and coffee residue buildup and supports regular wipe-down cleaning, while blending seamlessly with the exposed joist and brick interior and absorbing scattered reflected sound across the high-ceilinged space. Behind banquette seating and reading nooks we added E0-grade formaldehyde-free polyester fiber acoustic panels in warm book-brown tones, NRC 0.85–0.95, CNC cut to match the built-in bookshelf layout.

All panels carry EN 13501 Class A fire certification, meeting UK retail and catering venue safety requirements. Installation was completed after hours over 8 days with zero disruption to daily trading and events.

Project Results

Peak-hour ambient noise across the bookshop café dropped by an estimated 35%. Customers can hold conversations at normal volume even at full capacity, and average in-store dwell time increased by 24%. The wood wool ceiling holds up well to regular dust and spill exposure and cleaning, with the owner noting it reinforces the shop’s warm literary atmosphere rather than looking like a functional add-on.
