Challenge

This boutique boxing and functional fitness gym in Birmingham has exposed concrete ceiling and block walls. Heavy punching impacts, coach shouts, music and equipment clatter created severe echo. Music sounded muddy, coaches’ voice was lost in reverberation, and the noise disturbed nearby tenants in the same mixed-use building.

Solution

The whole gym ceiling adopts flat smooth fiberglass acoustic ceiling tiles, fully laid; the surface is hard, non-textured and fleece-free, absorbing reflected sound from impact noise and music. Perforated wood acoustic panels are mounted on back and side walls to tune mid-low frequency reverberation. Panels are mounted with cavity to boost low-frequency absorption for boxing impact sound. All products meet EN 13501 fire standards. Installation was completed overnight to avoid gym business interruption.

Result

Gym reverberation time reduced from 2.7s down to 1.0s. Coach instructions cut clearly through background music and training noise. Overall noise transmission to adjacent office tenants is controlled within local planning limits. The clean ceiling and perforated panels fit the industrial gym interior design.
