In a high-rise penthouse overlooking a glittering Gulf cityscape, the homeowner set out to build a private cinema room that would feel like a destination — not just a room with a projector and speakers. The dedicated basement-level space had the right proportions for a theatre, but its bare plaster walls and solid marble floor created obvious acoustic problems: dialogue sounded hollow, bass notes boomed uncontrollably, and the overall sound field lacked the precise layering that makes film soundtracks immersive. The homeowner was equally uncompromising on aesthetics. Standard acoustic foam panels and generic industrial finishes were rejected outright; every surface had to contribute to a refined, cinematic atmosphere that would feel intentional and luxurious, not like a technical retrofit.

The design revolved around a polyester fiber luminous starry acoustic ceiling as the room’s visual and acoustic centrepiece. Built on 100% recycled PET base material with an NRC rating of 0.92, the ceiling absorbs mid-high frequency reflected sound from above while embedded optical fibre star points — custom-arranged to mimic a real night sky constellation — deliver a fully immersive visual experience. The system supports stepless dimming and multiple scene presets: a full-star mode for film pre-show, a dimmed mode during screenings, and a soft ambient mode for music listening. The PET material is formaldehyde-free and ultra-low VOC, critical for an enclosed basement room used for hours at a time. Side walls and first reflection points are clad in high-density fibreglass-core fabric wrapped panels (NRC 0.85–1.0), upholstered in a deep midnight-blue velvet that mirrors the starry ceiling above and eliminates flutter echo across the room. Along the lower rear wall, a row of perforated acoustic panels backed with mineral wool and rear air cavities precisely targets 63–250Hz low-frequency standing waves, tightening bass response so that explosions and soundtrack lows feel controlled and impactful rather than muddy.

The 110㎡ cinema was completed in 15 days, with all wiring and mounting hardware fully concealed behind finished surfaces. Since handover, the room has become the homeowner’s most-used space in the penthouse. Movie dialogue is crisp and natural, bass response is deep and well-defined, and the starry ceiling creates a sense of immersion that guests consistently remark on before the film even begins. What makes the space work, ultimately, is that none of the acoustic treatment reads as acoustic treatment — the velvet walls, the glowing ceiling and the clean rear wall all belong to a single, cohesive design vision, while every surface is quietly doing the technical work that makes the room sound as good as it looks.
