This independent bookstore and café hybrid space combines reading areas, coffee bar and small cultural event zones, with an interior designed around warm, textured literary aesthetics. The original high-ceiling space with hardwood floors and brick accent walls suffered from uneven reverberation; quiet reading zones were disturbed by café chatter and espresso machine noise, while author talks and small readings suffered from muddy sound and poor speech clarity. The store owner wanted an acoustic upgrade that would preserve the space’s warm, intellectual atmosphere without looking like obvious functional retrofitting.

We delivered a layered custom acoustic solution combining cement-bonded wood wool ceiling panels and recycled polyester fiber wall panels. Wood wool panels were installed across the main ceiling, bringing natural fiber texture that complements the bookstore’s rustic literary style while providing NRC 0.80–0.90 overall space reverberation control. Targeted polyester panels were added to reading nook walls and event area backdrops, custom color-matched to the wall paint for near-invisible integration, further enhancing local sound clarity. The modular installation was completed outside business hours to avoid disrupting store operations.

After completion, the space achieves zoned acoustic balance: reading zones remain quiet and focused, the café area feels lively but not noisy, and speech intelligibility during cultural events is greatly improved. Customers report being able to read comfortably for longer periods, and event attendance and audience feedback have both improved. The project successfully blends acoustic functionality into the space’s existing aesthetic, proving that customized layered acoustic design can fully adapt to the complex, multi-functional needs of independent cultural and retail spaces.
